Dec 01, 2017 · 1. E4OD (’94.5-’97) To say the E4OD is the weakest automatic transmission to have ever been mated to a Power Stroke would be true, but you have to remember that it was based off of the C6—a design that was 30 years old (and originally intended solely for gas engines) when the 7.3L Power Stroke came along in the middle of 1994.
The E4OD marked a major shift by Ford from the hydraulic controlled technology to computer controls to shift gears. However, it did have some reliability issues. It had weak seals that allowed moisture inside the case, and occasionally the gears inexplicably shifted into neutral while the vehicle was in motion.
The 2 shifters cables are connected to the A Junction (3 port) with another cable going to the rear junction. It is possible that you have two bad ports on junction B and the derailleurs happen to be plugged into those ports, or the same issue with junction A and the shifters.
Forcing the Shift Here’s the manual shift pattern you can expect with the transmission in failsafe: And here’s how to force the E4OD to shift electrically: First Gear In first gear, only solenoid 1 receives ground. Second Gear To shift into second gear, the computer grounds solenoid 2; both shift solenoids are grounded. Third Gear

For the E4OD there are some tricks but if you have one rebuilt to the model year 95 or later most of the problems are taken care of. I have 160K on mine and no issues. For more inof head over to www.gofastbroncos.com there is a great thread in the tech section on E4ODs.
After a search yielded a couple tips for testing, and replacing a few parts, I'm stumped. So heres my problem, I hope a Ford guru can jump in and gimme a hand. I got a kid (broke intern) that works maintenance with me at the city. He's got a 93 Bronco, 5.0, E4OD, with about a billion miles on...
